​For 10,000 years, humanity enjoyed a stable and safe climate, one that allowed civilizations to flourish, agriculture to thrive, and communities to build their futures.

This period, known as the pre-industrial climate, provided the perfect balance for human progress.

The air we breathed contained CO2 levels of around 275 parts per million (ppm)—a natural equilibrium that supported life on Earth.

However, in just the last century, this balance has been disrupted.

The Industrial Revolution ushered in an era of unprecedented development, but it also brought rapid increases in greenhouse gas emissions.

Today, CO2 levels in the atmosphere far exceed the safe limits humanity has ever endured long-term, with levels soaring beyond 300 ppm—a threshold that has been stable for millennia.

This shift has taken us into uncharted territory.

The climate that supported humanity's greatest achievements is no longer our reality.

And yet, there is hope.

What Does a Safe Climate Look Like?

A safe climate is one that mirrors the stability of our pre-industrial past.

It is a climate where ecosystems thrive, weather patterns are predictable, and communities are not constantly battling the catastrophic impacts of extreme weather.

It's the climate that allowed ancient farmers to cultivate fertile lands, traders to cross seas with ease, and cities to rise without fear of inundation.

But restoring such a climate requires more than halting emissions.

Think of it like credit card debt and stopping unnecessary spending (reaching net-zero) is crucial, but you still need to pay off the accumulated balance (remove excess) to avoid long-term financial damage."

It’s the same way with the climate that demands a bold commitment to reversing the damage already done.

To achieve this, we must actively remove CO2 from the atmosphere—a monumental challenge that requires global collaboration and innovative solutions.

The Path to Climate Restoration

The world’s current goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 is critical, but it is not sufficient to restore the safe climate we once knew.

Net-zero focuses on stopping additional harm, but it doesn’t address the trillion tons of excess CO2 already destabilizing our planet.

To truly restore a safe climate, we need to remove this excess CO2—1,000,000,000,000 tons.

While this number may seem staggering, there’s reason to be optimistic:

Nature has achieved this before, and with the right tools and determination, we can do it again.

By scaling up climate-restoration solutions now, starting with rapid action by 2030, we can give future generations a chance to thrive in a safe, sustainable world.
